Complementary Therapies

Complementary therapies add an extra dimension of care to nurture the body, mind, and spirit. These non-invasive, holistic practices do not replace the medical, social, or spiritual care of the hospice team. Rather, they work with the total care of the interdisciplinary team to promote comfort and wholeness for both patients and their families. For some, complementary therapies are the best way to soothe the soul.

Complementary Therapy services are provided by staff, volunteers, and interns. They are available, by referral, to homecare and facility patients.  To request Complementary Therapies, speak with a member of your Trellis care team.

Patients are able to request massage therapy, music therapy, and/or art therapy.

Gentle Touch Therapies

Our Licensed Massage Therapists provide gentle support to increase your sense of physical comfort and nurturing. Hospice patients often cope with illnesses that can increase pain and discomfort, and that can impact the connections they share with caregivers. Massage therapists can help address pain, anxiety, sleeplessness, and isolation, and can adjust based on each patient’s unique needs. Highly trained volunteers partner with us to provide a range of touch and energy-based therapies.  Our team works with patients across a wide range of needs, offering support throughout the dying process.

Music Therapy

Music is a powerful element of life — it energizes, soothes, restores, and nurtures. In hospice care, music therapy is a powerful tool for physical, emotional, and spiritual care. Our Board-Certified Music Therapists use live music to decrease anxiety and pain, promote relaxation, facilitate communication, and to provide support with life review and legacy work. Patients may, but do not always, actively engage in music therapy sessions. Music therapists adapt music experiences that can include listening to live music, songwriting, and improvisation. Music therapists work with patients at all stages throughout a patient’s hospice care, joining with patients and families to foster meaning and comfort.
