Student Opportunities

Fellowship

In collaboration with Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Trellis Supportive Care (formerly Hospice & Palliative CareCenter) provides the hospice portion of fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. During their time at Trellis Supportive Care (formerly Hospice & Palliative CareCenter), the fellow will work at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home and will also work with the interdisciplinary team, follow hospice  patients at their homes and in nursing facilities, and work with the hospice professional staff learning about the administrative components of hospice.

Medical Student Rotations

In partnership with the Wake Forest University School of Medicine all third year medical students at WFUBMC will spend a week at the KBR hospice facility learning about the medical care of hospice patients. They will also have a lectures incorporated with their regular medical school lecture series focusing on the current hospice environment, symptom management, and healthcare ethics. During their time at KBR, they will work directly with hospice patients and their families under the supervision of one of the full-time hospice medical staff.

Fourth year medical students from WFUBMC or other medical schools throughout the country can spend a month at hospice getting an in-depth hospice experience. During the month, the student is partnered with one of the hospice full-time physicians and is able to follow in-patient hospice patients throughout their stay at KBR, visit patients in their homes, attend interdisciplinary team meetings, and develop a presentation on a topic of their interest in palliative medicine to be presented to the local palliative care community.

Internships

Trellis Supportive Care, North Carolina's original hospice and palliative care provider, is proud to be a teaching and training institution for a variety of disciplines. For example, we often have interns in the areas of nursing, social work, counseling, massage therapy, and pharmacy. The list goes on. During their time at hospice, these interns gain a first-hand education about the field of hospice and palliative care.  While under the supervision of our professional staff, the intern will work with hospice patients and their families, attend interdisciplinary team meetings, and have the opportunity to interact with all members of the hospice professional team.
